HERAKLION ANIMAL FEED GROUP

ZOH, a Greek acronym for Farmers Group of Heraklion) is an 87-year-old cheese-making company with traditional cheese-making methods. ZOH is pronounced ZOE which means LIFE in Greek.
ZOE has been making cheese with the old Greek traditions for three generations with the primary product of PDO Graviera of Crete. In the past, Zoe’s products were sold mainly in the local market of Crete, on nearby islands, and in Athens.
The new generation of the family took over the factory and has brought in investors to upgrade the facilities with state-of-the-art equipment, thereby enabling the company to increase the production and product lines of the cheese factory.
The principal elements for this investment focus on the following:
-Cretan Land-Location
-Traditional Cretan Livestock Farming
-Modernization
The production unit is located in the center of the mountains of Crete about forty-five kilometers south of Heraklion in the area of ancient Gortyn, which was in antiquity the capital of Crete. Its unique location allows the collection of fresh milk from local producers, sheep’s milk and some goat's milk. The collection process is conducted with our own equipment. Our cheese factory applies the Internationally Recognized HACCP and ISO 22000 certification system for Food Safety. It constantly conducts daily microbiological and physicochemical checks to ensure an excellent product and hygienic production processes.
We collect daily fresh milk from more than 500 Cretan farmers with local sheep and goats (Process has been initiated to recognize Cretan sheep and milk as PDO) which graze at the foot of Mount Psiloritis and in pastures of the Asterousia mountains (areas included in the Natura 2000 network, with 1,642 indigenous and native species of flora and 22 endemic plant species) with rare natural wealth. This fact, combined with the microclimate of the island, determines the taste and quality of milk, and gives a special taste to our cheese and dairy products.
In our model Cretan milk processing unit, applying the knowledge, experience, and secrets of previous generations, we managed to marry tradition with modern technology, creating a series of excellent products with consistent quality and taste.
In the range of our traditional cheese factory today you will find Cretan sheep’s milk Graviera, Goat Graviera, and Graviera of Crete PDO, Aged and Smoked, but also Kefalotyri, Mizithra, Xinomizithra PDO, Anthotyro dry, and fresh, Xinochondros or "dakotyri" of Crete and finally our own patented milk product in brine (Cretan feta) and (Cretan Haloumi)
A direct consequence of the modernization that is taking place is the forthcoming production of low-calorie cheese, and new innovative cheeses in terms of texture and flavors. In addition, in the new space, the production of a series of fresh sheep and goat milk (whole milk and low caloric content), chocolate milk, goat milk kefir, as well as the production of butter, yogurt (sheep and goat) and cream and rice pudding desserts will begin immediately.
Our objective is to strengthen ZOE's position in existing and new emerging markets (domestic and international). To achieve this, coordinated efforts will be made for collaborations in our cheese and dairy products with retail businesses and wholesalers in Greece, Cyprus and worldwide. We have started by creating a new corporate identity and designing new labels for our products and a new website.
ZOE intends to participate in major industry exhibitions both in Greece and abroad and in Greek and international tasting competitions.to highlight and promote its traditional products.

Cretan Tradition

Cretan land

Crete, an island surrounded by sea, which in combination with the unique flora and microclimate of the island, determines the taste and quality of milk produced by the indigenous sheep and goats of Crete, giving a special taste to each cheese produced in Crete. The quality of cheese and dairy products depends solely on the quality of food received by sheep and goats and Crete boasts a rare natural wealth proven by the 1,642 indigenous, native plant species and an additional twenty-two endemic plants that thrive exclusively on the island (areas protected in the Natura 2000 network).

Cretan Sheep and Goats

According to the official data of the Hellenic Statistical Service and ELGO, Crete is one of the strongest areas of population in Greece in sheep and goats. The indigenous breeds of Cretan sheep are that of Sfakia, one of the best mountain sheep in Europe, the breed of Asterousia and finally a small number of sheep from the area of Anogia. The Cretan sheep breeds are complemented by the local goat of Crete, The local sheep and goat breeds of animals in Crete, are fully acclimatized to the climatic conditions of the island, are mainly free range and feed almost exclusively on Cretan herbs and shrubs, resulting in products with a special aroma, special character, but also high nutritional value. Recently, procedures have begun to recognize Cretan sheep as PDO.

Cretan Shepherd

The oldest profession in Crete is that of shepherd - breeder, a fact confirmed by Minoan texts. In Crete there are mainly what is called "poimenikos" livestock, a type of farming where grazing of animals takes place in mountainous areas of Crete. For each shepherd, his flocks are part of his family, providing them with exceptional care and attention. The breeders we have chosen and worked with for many years share ZOH’s philosophy regarding the importance of tradition and quality.

Cretan cheeses

Cretan cheesemakers have a great reputation, they are cheese experts, and this is proven,by the four cheeses that have already been registered with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), with the famous Graviera of Crete standing out, followed by the other PDO cheeses such as Xinomizithra of Crete, Pichtogalo of Chania and Xygalo of Sitia. Cretan cheese has been famous since antiquity, where the island exported various cheeses. Cheese is one of the favorite foods of Greeks and especially of Cretans. The cheese products made on the island are of excellent quality and are made only with goat and sheep milk. (cow's milk is not used for any local type of cheese). The cheeses of Crete have special organoleptic characteristics, which differentiate them in terms of taste (now spicy), aroma, color, texture, hardness, and structure. The physiochemical properties of sheep's and goat's milk are of high quality. In addition, in Crete, apart from the above PDO cheeses, we can find goat Graviera, Kefalotyri of Crete, Malaka or Tyromalama, Tyrozouli, Athotyros hard or soft, Mizithra, Dikti cheese and other less known cheeses. Special mention should be made of the traditional village brine cheese that is made in Crete and is equal to the best feta cheeses produced nationwide.

Cretan cheeses & cheese products

The Cretan cheese-making tradition is long and rich, since almost every region has its own way of making cheese. In our model cheese factory, applying the knowledge, secrets, and three generations of experience in animal husbandry, we managed to marry tradition with modern technology creating a series of excellent products with consistent quality and taste. The special location of our cheese factory south of Heraklion, Crete in the area of ancient Gortys, allows us to collect daily fresh Cretan sheep and goat milk from local producers, almost all over Crete. The first modern cheese making in Crete took place in the 1930s at the Agricultural School of Gortys, in Heraklion in the area of Vourvoulitis where our cheese factory is located today. The new generation of cheesemakers at Farmers Group of Heraklion - ZOE make top cheeses daily with knowledge and passion, faithfully following the footsteps of tradition.

ANIMAL FEED

Within the framework of integrated services, the Farmers Group of Heraklion - ZOE chose to provide its partners – breeders with complementary feed during the dry season, in addition to the basic ration of sheep and goats. Sheep and goats prefer to eat pasture, and more precisely tender vegetation close to the soil surface. With the term pasture we define a wide range of plant species: grass, clover, chicory, legumes, shrubs, various weeds, and herbs of Crete. The biodiversity of Cretan pastures is linked to the quality of the feed (the more different plant species the better for the sheep and goats and consequently the milk they will produce). The diet of other sheep and goats includes natural foods abundantly provided by the Cretan land, as well as animal feed that our company supplies in consultation with livestock farmers and guarantees the best possible quality with the best possible organoleptic characteristics from plant ingredients not genetically modified.
